Boss OD-1 Original RC3403 Quad Op-amp Stripboard Veroboard layout


This is something I've wanted to re-visit for a while, I was never happy with my original layout - you couldn't use the proper op-amp in it and it was a bit crappy looking too.

I have added 2 parts to this build, neither affect the sound - they protect the circuit from the wrong polarity supplies which is necessary if you use the original RC3403 op-amp because it costs a fortune.

you can of course use a jellybean quad op-amp like a TL074 or LM324

    Hi. I have built this circuit and it doesn’t work, the guitar signal doesn’t reach the amp. I have been looking for mistakes for days, and once discarded communicating strips and as it seems the circuit is well built, I started to believe there are some ill components. The IC is TL074CN. I checked that the chip receives 9v on pin #4. Maybe the chip, althought it was in good condition, is the cause of the trouble? How can I be sure the chip is ok? I assume the TL074CN is compatible with this circuit design. Many thanks in advance.

    Well, it’s solved. The IC was defective or maybe burnt (as I guessed), just replaced it and it works. The TL074CN is compatible. Now the gain pot is reversed, if I turn clockwise the gain decreases, I imagine it is easy to solve.

    Nice layout, thanks! The gain pot is reversed though, like Roger said. To fix this, connect lug2 of VR1 to lug3 instead of lug1: The upper VR1 wire connects to VR1-1, and the bottom wire to VR1-2+3.

    Many thanks for sharing your layout :) circuit sounds great! surprisingly bright, but balanced enough. even works well boosting for high gain amps/tones.

    Hello. I built this variant but I have some doubts: Are you sure there aren’t any changes on the layout to use the RC3403 IC that are maybe missed to be noted but you did in your physical build? As the person above said, this works with the TL074 variant only. I also have a supposedly NOS sure working RC3403 from a good source, and it’s sounding very very low volume and strange, and I doubt it’s faulty. Could you please check?

    Hello, i can find diode 1s1588 what can i use instead, i try 1n4001 but it sound really bad. Thank u for the schematic
