KAT Treble Booster TAGBOARD layout

My good friend Dan White-Lock Jones sent me one of his amps to play around with so the 1st thing I did was add my favorite effect - the treble booster. I laid it out on tagboard to fit in with the rest of the amps insides so I thought that I would share it here.



the amp itself is a 2 channel beast - 1 channel is voxy and the other is a stripped back dumble. it's worth noting that Dan thoughtfully puts bleed resistors on the HT capacitors so there are no nasty surprises waiting inside!

Brian May BC149 Orange Label Treble Booster Stripboard Layout & Schematic

 I couldn't find much info on the electronics in this one so I had to trace it from various internal pictures around the internet. in some of them, there is a 100 ohm resistor between the battery and the PCB so if you have noise issues - add that. here's a good site for info on Brians Boosters history of brian mays treble boosters

May Queen Overdrive (originally by Runoffgroove.com) Stripboard layout


I used to make this pedal a lot and sell them on eBay so I thought I'd revisit it as it seems that I sold the one I made for myself too.
Anyway this is a pretty cool effect, it has a lot more drive than a standard treble booster and it layers up really nicely.

Maxon Treble Booster Stripboard Layout


I came across this interesting little thing so I thought I would make a clone of it.
it's a maxon treble booster.

they also did one called the power booster and as far as I can see the only differences between that and this is that the power booster has 2 470n capacitors in place of the 2.2n capacitors.

Vox Treble Booster Stripboard Veroboard Layout


3rd layout for Treble Booster April - it's also my 100th layout - I was going to make one of my own designs for the 100th but I haven't got a couple of the parts so this has to be the 100th.

This treble booster is a low gain one - definitely a nice sound though.

Dallas Rangemaster Treble Booster Stripboard Veroboard Layout


the 2nd Offering in "Treble Booster April" - the Rangemaster. I used the AC128 transistor in mine primarily because I didn't have any OC44s left I also added a 1N4001 diode to protect the circuit against reverse polarity - no, it doesn't change how it sounds and yes, you can leave it out if you don't believe me.

I know the 5nF transistor can be difficult to find so in the actual layout I put 4.7nF capacitor but given the nature of capacitor tolerances a 5nF rated capacitor would probably measure that far out anyway.
anyway - this is a lovely treble booster and I even used it in the song posted below so you can hear it in action.

Greg Fryer Brian May Treble Booster Deluxe Schematic Stripboard Veroboard Layout


this is one of the best treble boosters I've built and I've built alot of them being a Brian May fan.
this was traced from the circuit board and I have made 2 changes (that don't affect the sound)

1. in the original there are 2 power supply capacitors (47uf and 33uf) in parallel which was obviously used to keep production costs down - Greg will have initially put in the standard 100 uf capacitor but if his other pedals/products used 33uf and 47uf caps - it would have been cheaper to just parallel a couple of those up to get near enough.

2. the other change is that there are 2 10pf capacitors in series again this will be a production cost thing - it would be cheaper to use 2 10pf capacitors in series than adding 1 4.7pf cap to the build (if he used a lot of 10pf capacitors in other builds which he most probably will do.)

so with those changes noted: it sounds no different to the original unit but you can always swap them if you don't believe me.
